What does Iditarod Mean?

We have come across three different definitions — take your pick!
The following is from an article in the Anchorage Times following the 1973 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, written by Gordon Fowler, Times Sports writer:

Iditarod means clear water and was named by the Shageluk Indians for the Iditarod River.

The following came from one of the Anchorage papers during the 1983 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race:

The word comes from the Ingalik Indian word HaIditarod which was the name for the river on which the town was built. It means distant place.

And this one comes from James Kari, Assistant Professor, University of Alaska Native Language Center in 1979:

The name Iditarod came from an Ingalik and Holikachuk word hidedhod for the Iditarod River. This name means distant or distant place. This word is still known by elders in the villages of Shageluk, Anvik, Grayling and Holy Cross.

Iditarod Facts

The first Iditarod race to Nome started March 3, 1973.
Broken Records: In 1986, Susan Butcher broke Rick Swenson’s record, set in 1981, by completing the 1049+ miles in 11 days, 15 hours and six minutes, and this was done on the longer 'Northern' Route. In 1987 she broke her own record by finishing in 11 days, two hours, five minutes and 13 seconds. Then in 1990 she broke her record again, finishing in 11 days, one hour, 53 minutes, 23 seconds. In 1993, Jeff King broke all previous records, finishing in 10 days, 15 hours, 38 minutes, 15 seconds. In 1994 Martin Buser again set the record in 10 days, 13 hours, 02 minutes, 39 seconds. In 1995, Doug Swingley of Sims, Montana broke two records when he became the first musher from outside of Alaska to win the Iditarod and he did the 1150+ mile course in 9 days, 2 hours, 42 minutes and 19 seconds. In 2002, Martin Buser broke the record when he crossed the finish line in 8 days, 22 hours, 46 minutes and 2 seconds.
Carl Huntington won the 1974 race with the slowest winning time, 20 days, 15 hours, two minutes and seven seconds.
The teams average 16 dogs, which means over 1,000 dogs leave Anchorage for Nome.
There are 26 checkpoints on the northern route, the first in Anchorage and the last in Nome. On the southern route, there are 27 checkpoints.
The closest finish was in 1978. Dick Mackey finished one second ahead of Rick Swenson. Mackey’s time was 14 days, 18 hours, 52 minutes and 24 seconds. The winner was decided by the nose of the lead dog across the finish line.
The largest number of mushers to finish a single race was 77 in 2004.
A red lantern is awarded to the last musher to finish. The longest time for a Red Lantern was 32 days, 15 hours, nine minutes and one second by John Schultz in 1973. The quickest Red Lantern musher was David Straub with a time of 14 days, 5 hours, 38 minutes and 12 seconds.
Rick Swenson is the only five time winner of "The Last Great Race", having won in 1977, 1979, 1981, 1982 and 1991. He is now the only person to win the Iditarod in three different decades, a record that will probably never be broken.
Four time winner, Susan Butcher, claimed Iditarod victories in 1986, 1987, 1988 and again in 1990. Susan retired from long distance racing after the 1993 race in order to start a family with husband Dave Monson, himself a Yukon Quest champion. Their first daughter, Margarith, was born in the spring of 1995.
Dallas Seavey turned 18 on March 4, 2005. He is the youngest musher to run the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog race. The oldest musher to ever compete is Col. Norman Vaughan who will turn 88 in December. Col. Vaughan has completed the race four times and plans to go again in 1997 (Iditarod’s silver anniversary.)
Rick Mackey won the race in 1983 to become the first son of an Iditarod champion to match his father’s accomplishment. Lance Mackey won in 2007 to become the second son of an Iditarod champion. To further set a record, father and both sons were wearing bib number 13 when they crossed the finish line in first position, and they all three won in their sixth Iditarod. Anyone superstitious? (Emmitt Peters was also wearing bib #13 when he won the Iditarod in 1975.) Add one more for Lance — he had just won the Yukon Quest two weeks before, so now he is the first person to win both the Quest and Iditarod in the same year.

What are microchips? The “microchip” is a tiny computer chip programmed with an identification number and encapsulated by a biocompatible material. Microchips are about the size of a grain of rice. They are usually implanted under the dog’s skin either in the shoulder area, back of the neck or behind the ear.

In October of 2008, the "Holland Military Dog Hospital" opened it's doors at the Lackland Air Force base in, San Antonio. The dog hospital is a 15 million dollar vet facility for 2000 military working dogs, and some of these dogs fought in the war in Iraq, worked as transportation security, or for the US Custom's service. There are 45 staff members and if a dog cannot be used for the government again, then it goes up for adoption.
It is about a year to get that special dog. If you are looking to do a good deed for the new year, try giving a donation to the hospital or try adopting one of these wonderful dogs.

The Xolotzcuintles is a very rare breed. They date back more than 3000 years. It was not until the 1940's did they begin to show them at dog shows, and not until the 1950's did they get noticed. They are among the first of the breeds to be recorded by the AKC in 1887.
The adults are calm, but puppies can be unruly and very noisy. They love to escape and run after other animals. They rank are among the rarest dog breeds in the world.

CentralArFTV is a home for dog lovers, but we had to focus on the story of fat cat, Prince Chunk who just died on Sunday. Prince Chunk received a lot of attention in 2008 when he was found homeless due to his owners losing their home in New Jersey due to foreclosure. The cat was sent to the local shelter and it was suggested that he was the second heaviest cat weighing in at 44 pounds. The man who adopted the cat disagrees with the weight, but did put him on a diet. Prince Chunk received a lot of media attention due to being homeless and so fat. He was on TV shows and in magazines. The owner Damiani did put Prince Chunk on a diet and he did lose weight. The cat died at the age of ten. The fact that a non-profit organization was a result of this story to help animals who become homeless due to it owners losing their homes is wonderful. The fat cat instigated a fat idea to help other animals....way to go!

It is not that often that a hero comes along, and when it is a dog- it is really special. Not only was Target a hero, but he was very special because he came from Afghanistan. He was not only a dog that was a war dog, but he helped save many lives of soldiers.
Target was brought back home by a soldier named Young, and moved to Arizona. He received a lot of attention when he came to America for he was even featured on Oprah.
It has been reported that he escaped from his home and ended up at the local shelter. His owner thought that the shelter was closed over the weekend and sadly someone from the shelter euthanized him.
It is a shame that Young did not have Target wear a micro chip in his ear, and why would a dog be euthanized so quickly at a shelter? There is an investigation being done. This is a very sad and depressing story.

Charlie is only three and a half pounds but is very tough. He was involved in a bitter battle with a co-op board to evict him just for being a dog. His owner, Donna Forman lived in the building for ten years and during that time the co-op board changed the rules about dogs being allowed in the building. The board was so adament about it that they had spent three years and 100 thousand dollars in legal fees to get rid of Charlie. Yes! They wanted to evict him. The good news is that Charlie won, but now the tenants will have to pay about 4000 dollars to pay for the cost of court costs.

"Scooby-Doo, Where are You!" was created in 1969, by Hanna and Barbera and aired on CBS. The show featured a talking dog named Scooby Doo; the original series included four teenagers or young adults: Fred "Freddy" Jones, Daphne Blake, Velma Dickney, and Norville "Shaggy" Rogers. These five characters (officially collectively known as "Mystery, Inc.", but never referred to as such in the original series) drive around in the Mystery Machine van, solving mysteries by exposing seemingly otherworldly ghosts and monsters as flesh and blood crooks. Joe Ruby and Ken Spears were the writers of the show. The original series, ran from 1968 to 1976.

Well, Lassie and Rin Tin Tin are the only 2 dogs to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Lassie is an American television series that follows the adventures of a female rough collie named Lassie and her companions, human and animal. The show was the creation of producer Robert Maxwell and animal trainer Rudd Weatherwax and was televised from Sunday September 12, 1954, to Sunday March 24, 1973. One of the longest running dramatic series on television, the show chalked up seventeen seasons on CBS before entering first-run syndication for its final two seasons. Initially filmed in black and white, the show transitioned to color during 1965 (although there had been a previous 1963 5 episode arc shot in color and re-edited as a feature film Lassie's Great Adventure).

September 10, 1918 – August 10, 1932) was a shell-shocked pup found by American serviceman Lee Duncan in a bombed-out dog kennel in Lorraine, France, less than two months before the end of World War I. He was named for a puppet called Rin tin tin that French children gave to the American soldiers for good luck. The dog returned at war's end with Duncan to his home in Los Angeles, California.^[1] In color he was a dark sable, with very dark eyes.

His friends in school would even nickname him because he was always with dogs. He had decided when he was young that he wanted to be the best dog trainer in the world.
